Department – Pre-College Programs
Job Title – Pre-College Programs Mentor
Purpose of Job
Pre-College Programs is seeking high energy, empathetic, dedicated student leaders to serve as mentors to high school students during the 2017-2018 academic year. As a college mentor, you will help high school students from the greater Milwaukee area develop leadership skills and learn about college life. Mentors for Project Pioneer will also serve as leaders, stand as an example and role model for high school participants. Mentors will attend 12-15 Saturday programs throughout the academic year, and visit students at their high schools throughout the week. Mentors will also support Director and other program staff with administrative tasks and program planning during week, if aid award allows. Mentors will be selected based on application, interview, and a background check.
Duties and Responsibilities
Attend all Saturday Academy sessions from 8:30 AM-2:00 PM (exact dates TBD)
Work with Director and other mentors during the week to prepare materials for the Saturday Academies (1-5 hours weekly, depending on your schedule and aid award)
Attend mentor training (3 hrs in fall and winter)
Serve as a guide, resource, and mentor for your group of high school students
Maintain weekly contact with your students on visits to students’ high schools in Waukesha and Milwaukee
Collect and manage student applications, waivers and other required documents
Assist students with study tools, homework, questions about college and college application process
Meet with Program Director and student staff team once a week during weekly meetings
Other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications
Must maintain 2.5 GPA
Must undergo background check
Must have an interest in education and working with high school-aged youth
Must possess critical thinking and problem solving skills
Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated
Pre-College mentors must display the following character traits: Openness to understanding cultural differences, willingness to try new things and have new experiences, good listening skills, empathy, patience, sense of humor, positive attitude
